Volkswagen is a name that has become synonymous with road travel, whether it’s the colorful vintage VW campers that have inspired wanderlust throughout the decades or larger custom builds that facilitate more rugged outdoor adventuring. Now, the company has announced a new iteration of their popular Caddy van, an interesting prospect for travelers that may be looking for something small in size but big on ideas.
A completely redesigned model in the fifth generation of the Caddy range, the new Caddy California includes adjustable living spaces, with areas for sleeping and storage, and aims to be useful both in everyday life and for longer journeys. The van has a panoramic sunroof and expanded storage space, as well as a miniature kitchen with a compact gas cooker concealed in the back that pulls out to standing height. A free-standing modular tent system can even be connected with the van, extending it into a portable campsite big enough for a family of four.
Due to launch before the end of the year, the Caddy California was designed as a crossover between a compact van and a camper, and has a fold-out bed with springs and a mattress. When folded up the bed reduces to a third of its length, sitting into the boot space. The second row seating can be taken out completely before a trip to create space for storage and sleeping.
A companion app acts as a guide for road trips, with information on camp sites, and water and waste disposal points. Other details to make camping more functional include a dimmable LED lighting system, integrated fly screens and camping furniture that can be stowed in a bag under the bed. Lovers of the night sky can configured the Caddy California with a large panoramic sunroof to give beautiful views, while there is a curtain system for complete privacy when needed
The optional miniature kitchen is accessed via a hatch and has a wind shield and a shelf. The bottom pull-out part contains a cutlery tray and further storage space for utensils and provisions, while built into the rear part of the kitchen is a locked box with a vent for a gas tank.
